A very cold morning on Friday 9 July 2021 sees the Victorian gas price spiking to a massive A$34.84/Gj with demand at 1100 Tj.

The Sydney price is A$29.78/Gj (333 Tj). Note how Victorian demand is more than three times Sydney's, reflecting not just colder typical winter temperatures but also how a wonderful former Liberal Premier (our longest serving one), Sir Henry Bolte, from about 1970 ensured that Melbourne residences and businesses had access to natural gas. In the last 15 years, quite a few rural towns have also been connected, an extremely beneficial move despite teh stupidity of the current Victorian Labor Government that claims it wants to phase out natural gas use.

'The Australian' has a major article about how gas prices have spiked and commentary from industry groups, even though many major manufacturers are on long term contracts set at A$8-9/Gj, so spot prices are irrelevant:

"...Wholesale spot prices in Sydney were $20.75 a gigajoule on Thursday, up from $10.30 a month ago, while Melbourne prices have risen in the past month from $8.60 to $22 a gigajoule, according to figures from Energy Edge.

Prices in Brisbane have risen from $11 to $18.70 a gigajoule, and from $10.90 to $28 in Adelaide..."
