Cu and Au are two sides of the same coin. Just look at the chart below (Au in orange while Cu in candles).
They are in unison until there is a market dislocation. In such an event Au will diverge to the upside upon recovery Cu catches up while Au retraces. This divergence is a short term phenomenon, lasts around 12 months.
In the long run both will have their price direction determined by the commodities cycle, ultimately.
