Certainly a very valid point there Benny re the value of your time vs a tradesmans. The key point for consideration is if you are doing the job yourself at the expense of your normal day job (where you earn a higher rate) then it is false economics (this also includes taking substantially longer to finish a job if the asset could be finished sooner and be earning money quicker). However if you do the job yourself (especially on your primary residence) in your spare time - your time is your own to do what you want as you see fit. The other key thing is many people just cannot afford to pay to have things done - doing it DIY allows the expenses to be spread out over a longer period of time and obviously saves labour costs.
