All valid points. You do get great satsifaction completing a project that has transformed a house. I think from and outsiders point of view the hardest thing would be finding good honest hard working tradesmen that take pride in their work, makeing a DIY project even more appealing.
With regards to my point about the value of time, I agree with what you are saying UT but it depends how you look at it. I place a base value on my time regardless of what time of the day or what day of the week it is. I can be tileing in the evening or hitting the books to futher my value in my primary profession. I personally see greater value in the latter but I also know a very good tiler that carges a very fair rate and I wouldn't get the same satisfaction as I have done countless home improvments in the past. However I do enjoy doing all my own landscapeing and see that in the same light as you would doing you own plastering etc.
