Afghanistan is an Islamic country wedged between 2 Islamic
countries, namely Pakistan to the East & Iran to the West .
The US supported the Taliban in the 1980s in the Russian.Afghan war
and, when Russia had to withdraw, the Mujahideen/Taliban alliance
took over with the Taliban eventually gaining outright power in the late 1990s.

seminaries and Saudi Arabia. They gave a safe haven to Osama bin Laden
when the US routed him out of Africa.
The Taliban instituted Sharia Law (executed murderers & adulterers,
amputated for theft & confined women to the home and mandatory burka
wearing) They also cracked down on Poppy growing & western influences
thereby breaking up the Warlord/Heroin structure.
During this period many Afghans were killed and emigrated.
At present there are about 30 million Afghans left with close to a million
in the Taliban brigades and an unknown number of passive sympathisers.
