I applaud your backing of your coach and I have felt the pain first hand from my 10 yo son who is an out and out Bombers supporter despite his parents being Eagles members.
The facts however demonstrate that Hirdy not only knew of the supplement regime but supported. Whether that be directly or by his influential role as the leader of the Football Department is immaterial.
As a former Olympic athlete I am fully aware of the extent of the potential sanctions for breaching the WADA code which ASADA administers. As a coach you have distinct responsibilities in that influential position not to engage in a conflict of interest when it comes to the duty of care for the players' welfare. Jimmy has obviously naively or ignorantly breached that level of trust.
My take on the outcome is that Hird will stand down on Monday, ASADA will ban the involved players for six months circa July and Essendon will be forced to play a Reseves type team for the rest of the season.
The real perpetrator here though is Demetriou and the AFL for propagating such a weak anti drugs stance using the head in the sand approach or the feather duster punitive affect in addressing this issue.
Three strikes? What an absolute joke! An exhaustive testing program when on average less than one player is tested every season? No target or out of competition testing? The AFL are clearly complicit in this whole sorry story and it just once again highlights the deficiency in professionalism, governance and accountability from the afl leadership.
