What really gets my goat is not only the blatant momentum changing umpire calls which are either completely wrong, completely inconsistent, or leave everyone scratching their heads, but all the subtle cheating that doesn't even register in the stats, like
- called not 15 with a player stood next to you - called play on for supposedly going an inch off the line (with a player stood next to you) - called back three metres from the mark to put kicker in range - penalty awarded to you when you're charging off down field and it's the last thing that you want. - discrepancy of where penalties are awarded, how many opposition penalties are within goal kicking range? - holding the ball given as in the back and vice versa - blocking free kicks - ruck infringements - insufficient attempt
Yes, umpires we're watching you, except for some of your more blatant cheating, because with worst cases, we miraculously don't even get to see replay, oh and don't get me started on the one-eyed commentary.
Maybe it's time to reinstate the VFL, and then leave the rest to their own comp. Or at very least have the umpires badged so that we know their state of origin, I'm sure we'd all find it very illuminating.
