The AFR may be bad for picking stocks, but it is pretty useful for putting together the macro picture if you cared to read it; along with even slower news like The Economist. Both have been painting a grim macro picture for a while. But neither present a singular story; there might be a story in today's AFR saying gold will be 2000 the job is to put the pieces together yourself.
I would say that anyone who does not read the AFR and or The Economist on a regular basis in-the-least will miss reading what everyone else knows, but worse, will miss early macro trends that will eventually effect micro ones.
