I am informed and have been following the issues of ensuring diversity in data sets . Sadly I had Appen as a major holding . A shade of brown which will always vary in families, is not a fixed attribute that goes to defining a certain culture or attributes thereof. There is no way this goes to the crux of the dataset outcomes required and needing to be addressed. Using language associated with oppressive regimes history has put to rest has absolutely no excuse. No competent communications , HR or PR staff would do this . Being more dark within a race does not denote you are different somehow culturally and in expression from other members of your race. Genetics reveal colour can vary tremendously in one family or a race so it has no place in establishing any sort of differentiating criteria. If Appen feels the intent if not the woeful expression of the question has plausible convincing reasons to justify its use it needs to provide a comprehensive explanation for this .
