"In the United States, the brown paper test has long been a pejorative term to reference the experience of African Americans who couldn’t get jobs if their skin is darker than a paper bag.And Sydney-based tech company Appen has caused major offence in the country after a job ad asked an African American applicant Charne Graham to identify her skin colour in a range from light pale to very dark brown to black.A tweet from the digital media strategist details her outrage at being asked to identify how dark her skin is. It has now been retweeted 10,500 times and counting.

So why does the artificial (or zero) intelligence group want to judge applicants on the shade of their skin? It argues the “optional question” is “used to ensure diverse datasets are included in the collection and annotation used to train computer vision algorithms”.But perhaps the imbeciles at Appen could make this clear before grossly offending its job applicants."

This kind of utter idiocy and lack of consideration for the feelings of others is the kind of thing that really puts me off investing in a company. Not a good look for Appen when it needs all the good news it can get right now...
