Patersons’ Top Four oil and gas picks

Patersons Securities is highlighting its Top Four picks from ASX stocks with exposure to premium oil and gas ground in Texas in the US.
■ Antares Energy: BUY
■ Lonestar Resources: HOLD
■ Sun Resource: SPECULATIVE BUY
■ Sundance Energy: BUY
Patersons said output of oil in Texas has nearly doubled in only two years (see Figure 2) with much of the increase in Texas oil production primarily in two oil fields, the Eagle Ford Shale in South Central Texas, extending southwest from San Antonio, and the Permian Basin in West Texas, centred in the Midland-Odessa area.
“These two plays are considered the ‘star players of the nation’s shale boom’,” Patersons said in its Monthly Strategic Outlook for July. “Texas is what we would call the epicentre of the shale revolution.”
Antares Energy is focused on the Permian Basin and Patersons said it sees “large upside available through the potential use of horizontal wells”. It has a target price of $1.29 on the stock, which currently trades around 54¢.
