Well, I've been here almost 70 years, albalad, and Australia has always been a violent place. It was very deceptive up until the 80s/90's because so much bad shit that happened that just didn't reach the media or was ignored citing public sensitivity issues - pedophilia attacks on kids didn't make the news, rapes were rarely reported and if so rarely made the media. I even remember a case where two 9-year-old boys were kidnapped at knifepoint in Melbourne in 1965 that never made the news. Different day's now with better communications tech, a world-wide, hungry media machine and the publics hunger for sensationalist news. So now we get more of a realistic picture of crime on a day-to-day basis on a 24 hour cycle. None of that was even possible prior to the 90's, so the extent of crime was deceptive.
