AFRICAN Petroleum has hit 32m of net oil pay with its Narnia-1 deepwater well in Liberian Block LB-09, which it said proves up the prospectivity of the block and neighbouring LB-08.

It hit the pay in two zones, 21m in the Turonian reservoir and 11m in the Albian, with oil found in the zones being 37 degrees API and 44 degrees API respectively.

It also encountered oil shows over a 170m interval in the Turonian and no oil-water contact.

Elsewhere, African encountered 216m of water-bearing reservoir sands in the shallower Capanian, Santonian, and Coniacian horizons.

While it did not expect to hit oil due to the absence of a prospect trap, the confirmation of good quality thick reservoir sands reduces the risk of a number of large prospects over a 500sq.km area.

The three levels are known to be oil-bearing in the region.

African hit 300m of source rocks in the deeper Cenomanian and Albian reservoirs, which will be incorporated into the regional geological model.

The well was drilled by the Maersk Deliverer to a total depth of 4850m in 1.1km of water, taking 43 days for completion.

African Petroleum will now scour the market for rigs as it gears up for an extensive exploration and appraisal program on the blocks this year.

It holds 100% in the two blocks.
