Africans begin new life in NSW
March 08, 2005
From: AAP
A GROUP of 56 African refugees arrived at Sydney airport today as part of a Federal Government humanitarian program that will see 13,000 people resettle in Australia during 2004/05.
They have lived for up to 10 years in refugee camps in Tanzania, with many of the 33 children in the group spending their entire lives in the camp.
The group is predominantly from Burundi, Zaire and Rwanda.
Department of Immigration New South Wales director Jim O'Callaghan today said the refugees had been living in horrendous conditions, and had all been victims of civil war.
"Many of them have fled situations where their homes have been burned and their husbands and family have been killed - they've had a very, very difficult life," he said.
The refugees would be settled in NSW, mainly in Auburn, Fairfield, Newcastle and Wollongong, Mr O'Callaghan said.
They would experience a dramatic contrast living in Australia compared to their former lives, he said.
"They're coming from a diabolical third world situation to one of the best resettlement situations in the world."

I would like to bid them all welcome to the best country in the world and wish them every happiness and prosperity in their future years in Australia.
