From a very simple google search you can see the majority of retailers were offering in the order of 20%-30% discounts on Afterpay Day which would be broadly equivalent to other sales events throughout the year.
The author and yourself are keen to quote the highest sales discount (70%) and a high merchant cost (6% + 30c) in order to propagate your poor argument. This is your M.O and that's fine.
Are you contending that the merchants who offer a discount for this sales event are failing businesses about to go broke?
