You need about
300 years - all the way back to the
South Sea Bubble - to get any real historical perspective of stockmarkets.
Here's the DJIA. Note the
false recovery about six months after the initial crash. There was another
major recession in 1937. The DJIA finally recovered to it's pre-1929 level in
1950. A 'mere'
21 years later.
