I think you might have a distorted view of how much it costs to keep a customer account that is dormant.
The funny thing is, the more dormant customers you have on record, the less cost per customer it is. Economies of scale and all that. Anyway, my reckoning is around 2 cents per customer per year - that's assuming multi-continent geo-redundant storage, regular security audits and so on - pretty much what a bank does for it's customer accounts.
Plus, it's not a good idea to discourage casual users - otherwise they'd lose customers like me. Not having used Afterpay for over a year, I had reason to on the weekend because I needed to suddenly buy a new oven. If I had to pay an ongoing fee, I doubt I'd have kept my Afterpay account at all.
You really are hell bent on seeing the down side to everything, aren't you?
