Yes I know SQ can coexist with V, MA, but obviously if a SQ user pays on a SQ terminal, SQ will be able to route that internally. If SQ became big enough it would pose a threat.

It won't be a threat. Nobody can operate outside the banking system. Even Visa and MC are little more than back-end payment processors for banks (which issue the cards),
