When agricultural giant Monsanto Co. and fertilizer maker Mosaic Co. recently announced strong earnings that blew past expectations, the dealmaking trend in the industry received a bullish push that promises to keep the momentum growing.
Two bulls of the agriculture sector -- Francis P. Jenkins Jr. and G. Kenneth Moshenek of Shermen WSC Acquisition Corp., a SPAC focused on the agriculture sector -- recently explained in The Deal's Industry Insight column why there is so much potential for investment and M&A activity in the area: "Population trends, world income growth, basic supply-and-demand dynamics, environmental issues and even more recent food safety concerns are driving interest in the agriculture sector. ... This confluence of forces is creating considerable opportunity for deal activity, through investment or consolidation."
