In the last bull market Cameco's price started moving six months before the spot price. This doesn't mean the same thing will happen this time around, but if history is any guide the spot price will start moving around June. But it could happen any time.
The spot market represents about 15% of the overall market. It's small, it's illiquid and it's largely irrelevant, although it does somewhat fuel sentiment in equities.
The utilities and their nuclear fuel buyers often leave their purchasing decisions to the last minute. They're not incentivised by contract pricing. They're not financially rewarded for saving their company money, or penalised for signing expensive contracts. It's a disfunctional industry.
The bull market has started and it's going to be a lot of fun for patient holders and those with a stomach for volatility.
