    Back in the Dark Ages when I started paying tax, universal entitlement to the pension was I think part of the deal. Later that became subject to means test.

    I agree, in fact I know that many very wealthy people who do not need the age pension are able to get it by utilising various devices and loopholes. I don't agree with that, in fact I deplore it, but neither do I agree with the ideas of the OP. They are in my view the stuff of totalitarian socialism.

    There are many many things on the public expenditure side that are in need of drastic reform before recourse should be had to depriving the average age pensioner of their main source of income.
