gtc61 - Thanks for your thoughtful reply. One of the problems with issues such as these is that the waters have all been so muddied that a clear picture is very difficult to achieve.

re AGL, 2050 : The issue is the building of new plants to replace those that must close by 2050. I suspect that AGL are nervous of the political environment, rather than deterred by cost, and they know that no statement made now about 2050 can be binding. Germany has elected to build new coal-fired power stations rather than expand wind and solar, in order to fill the gap from the closed nuclear stations. Why? Simple. Wind and solar do not provide baseload power, and coal is the most cost-effective option.

re RET and the cost of energy : The RET has pushed up the cost of energy by sucking in huge subsidies from government. Note that I referred to "the cost of energy" not "household electricity bills". The fact that governments wasted money in the past is no excuse for wasting money now. The RET also adds to distribution costs because of its unreliability - the network is highly stressed when there is a high proportion of unreliable energy, and the greater the proportion the even greater the stress. There is also the additional cost of backup supply - every nominal megawatt of unreliable energy has to have a megawatt of backup.

re employment : That's a drain on the economy, not a benefit. Sure, there can be short term unemployment issues, and the government may feel compelled to spend money on them, but the RET is a very expensive and long term cash sink. ie, it's a very large Bastiat's Window. I refer you also to http://michaelsenergy.com/2012/05/widgetman/ and the Milton Friedman story about shovels and spoons.

re insurance : I prefer to insure with companies that will pay out if there's a claim. The problem with your argument is that you are prepared to pay a large premium for ..... what? Cutting CO2 emissions in Australia can't ever make a measurable difference to the world's temperature. The cost of attempting to mitigate against CO2-driven warming, which is manifestly not happening, is far higher than the cost of adaptation could ever be.

re cost effective and efficient storage, and nuclear : Agree.
