CATL cannot afford to let the opportunity to secure Manono go to CMOC /Shanshan.

In a leaked product roadmap, VW plans indicate that at least three of its upcoming electric cars are to be sold in China.

Those are the ID Cross, ID Lounge, and ID AEROe—although VW so far hasn't shown the latter two.
Volkswagen's electric-car production target will require 150 gigawatt-hours worth of lithium-ion batteries each year.
And as of now, China looks poised to take what could be the largest part of the German automaker's battery needs.

CATL has plans for 60 gigawatts-hours worth lithium -ion batteries to meet its expansion ambitions and meet current customers , if it wants a major slice of the VW contract must secure lithium supplies.
Already has major contract with VW with the Glencore deal ,regarding cobalt supplies but VW requires additional supply which depending on Huayou if it has additional capacity to supply VW.

Against the exponential growth in lithium demand
