UCG doesn't utilise or extract csm.

the UCG process actually creates its own gas called syngas and the csm remains in the coal seam as that coal seam is burnt and never sees the light of day.

as you will know, the presence of csm isn't a factor in determining a suitable UCG site and unlike CSM extraction, the UCG process is advantaged by the water in the seam.

so the reason csm and ucg can't coexist on the same site is that CSM requires DE-watering and fracturing of the seam in order to release the gas which will be detrimental to UCG because UCG requires water and continuity of the seams i.e, NOT fractured.

so the queensland government are pretty happy to shelve a process that can extract 80% of the energy potential of a coal seam that UCG can extract in favor of a process that extracts just 5% and once that 5% is extracted that 80% is lost FOREVER.
