Sony are not idiots - you cannot become one of the worlds leading electronics companies by not doing an appropriate due diligence.
The due diligence itself would have focussed on the technical issues surrounding the base technology and its translation in to mass production.
The marketing aspects largely sell themselves, hence, the obvious attraction to the technology.
The technical due diligence would have taken many months not days or weeks - remember this is a Japanese company!!!
