That will most likely be due to shorting by parasites such as State Street and others. Short selling is a blight on the markets - I've never believed the standard line about "Oh it adds liquidity to the markets".
Selling something you don't own should be as illegal for shares as it is for other items - your mate's house, for example. "Oh don't worry, I bought it back this morning, but I'm afraid its value is now halved. But that's your problem, not mine - I made a profit from selling your house and buying it back".
Markets, trading, and investing were all so much more civilized and meaningful while shorting was banned during and after the GFC.
