Farage is implying that NATO expansion and the threat to russia was used as an excuse. I cant see anywhere in that link where he says it was a real threat. To that extent the attacks on Farage are overdone All just attempted political point scoring in an election year
putin always has an excuse when he invades his neighbors, if it wasn't NATO expansion it would have been something else.
NATO is a threat to putins ambitions, not russia.
putins still sees all countries annexed by the former soviet union as part of his inherited empire to do with as he sees fit. If they join NATO he cant have his way with them anymore. putin hates NATO, it stops him.
