Phuket Named As Possible Terrorist Target
October 25 2002
Australians were yesterday warned to exercise extreme caution on the popular Thai resort island of Phuket following the Bali bombings.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade updated its travel advice, saying threats "against Australians and Australian interests in Thailand are high, given possible terrorist action".
It said extreme caution should be exercised, particularly in commercial and public areas known to be frequented by foreigners. It also said that tourists should maintain a high level of awareness about personal security.
The department has updated its general advice to all travellers, saying the terrorist attack in Bali on October 12 underscores the ongoing threat across the world posed by terrorist groups.
Denmark, which currently controls the presidency of the European Union, also warned yesterday that it had received information on possible terror attacks in Thailand, naming specifically Patong, in the west of Phuket, as a potential target.
