Senator Pocock created the video, as well as one using Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, in a warning to politicians of how easy it can be to fake their likeness.

Posting the videos to social media on Saturday, he stressed there were just five weeks left for parliament to push through laws banning the use of AI in election materials, or else risk becoming victims of deepfakes like those he has made.

"Now is the time for the government to act to safeguard our democracy and ensure elections are fought and won as a contest of ideas, not on the basis of who can produce the best deepfakes or tell the most convincing lies," Senator Pocock said.

"Time is fast running out to regulate this before Australians return to the polls."

AI and Deepfakes are being used to spread misinformation and disinformation and mislead voters.

We’ve seen generative AI being used around the world to try and influence elections.

Australians should be able to decide how to vote on the basis of facts, not fakes.

Currently in Australia there are no laws against using AI in elections, or for that matter telling lies or spreading misinformation.

The Australian Electoral Commissioner has said “The AEC does not possess the legislative tools or internal technical capability to deter, detect or then adequately deal with false AI-generated content concerning the election process.”

Deep fake vids are a serious matter. would you like to see Dutton saying he planned to dump all renewable energy and increase coal fired gen by building a dozen new coal fired generator plants around the country instead of nuclear? you can if someone , maybe you, makes a deepfake.

what about Albanese showing his nipples and dancing a fandango at a strip joint? like to see that.... anything is possible.

the deepfakes that Pocock had made don't look crash hot. they aren't using the usual speech patterns or wording that either Dutton of Albanese use, and the dubbing is slightly out. perhaps the vids were made badly so as to not confuse viewers into thinking they were real. a bit obvious.
