If I recall, an interesting report a few days ago (for Victoria) suggested that more hot water was being used in Victoria due to coronavirus.
Logically, if people are at home longer and don't have to catch the train/tram/ferry/bus or drive to work, there's the temptation, particularly in colder climate like Vic/Tas and sometimes Adelaide, to spend more time 'under the shower' and hence use more litres.
As you suggest, higher hot water usage "may" - I lack any industry knowledge - result in gas or electric hot water units having to be replaced earlier than anticipated.
In 'normal times', my previous one lasted 20 years under my stewardship and probably two or three under previous owners, but I gather that supposedly the median life may be 12 to 15 years if that. However I've never seen one fail in that time period.
