Your stats are a bit off but yes Is a very small amount of people... This has always been the case!! The main concern has never been about death rates. it's about how much a health care system can handle.
Even though 5% is not quite right, let's use it for an example in NZ.
5% of 5 million = 250,000 people requiring medical assistance let's say another 5% of that 250000 need hospital help (again this is not a correct figure, its actually much more, just using it for this example) = 12,500 people in hospital JUST FROM COVID.
Death Rates increase when people cant be treated with the proper equipment or when a health system is pushed to its limits.
Remember, 5% is a lot of people when your talking about a whole country.
