Economically, and business wise, the coal plant is a base load generator. Low cost, reliable. It has to be continuously run to produce the low costs, like a diesel engine. They are extremely uneconomic to "fire up" now and then, it costs a great deal to fire up, then to lose all the heat momentum firing down after a relatively brief run and have the staff and the big capital investment sitting around ready for the occasional call. It seems fundamental industrial economics which our prosperity is based upon has been replaced by minds that are unfamiliar with the fundamentals of industry or commerce at any level, eg Boris with his speciality of Churchill.
