Interesting post nobull. How serious is the suggestion of separation of mosque and state? There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that religious control of political power leads to impoverishment of the people - how can any nation truly advance where dogma and superstition overrides reason and truth? However it would be a truly dramatic constitutional reform and I find it hard to imagine.
Meanwhile Syria is at a very tense point. The recent brutality by rebels raises doubts about the quality of what might follow Assad. Surely they won't be worse but will they bring change that is broadly beneficial in the middle east? The same questions will come in due course in Iran too.
