Gaza health authorities said on Friday that at least 11,078 Palestinians, including 4,506 children, have died since Israel launched its retaliation for the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas.

About 2,700 people have been reported missing and are thought to be possibly trapped or dead under the rubble.

Israel says about 1,200 Israelis were killed in the October 7 attack, a figure revised down from the previously reported 1,400.

Israel has rejected growing calls for a ceasefire, saying it would not stop until about 240 hostages taken by Hamas were returned, pushing further into Gaza City in its ground invasion aiming to eliminate the militant group.

Israel denies firing on Al Shifa hospital

Palestinian officials said two babies had died and dozens more were at risk after fuel ran out at Gaza's largest hospital on Saturday, while Israel said it was ready to evacuate babies from the facility.

Ashraf Al-Qidra, who represents the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, said Israeli army snipers on the rooftops of buildings near the Al Shifa hospital fired into the medical complex from time to time, limiting people's ability to move.

"We are besieged inside the Al Shifa Medical Complex, and the [Israeli] occupation has targeted most of the buildings inside," he told Reuters by phone.

The hospital suspended operations after fuel ran out, Mr Qidra said, adding that two babies had died in an incubator.

There were 45 babies in total at the hospital, he said.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said people were being shot at as they tried to leave the hospital, which is the main medical facility in Gaza.

"Our staff are witnessing people being shot at as they attempt to flee the hospital," MSF said in a report published on Saturday.

"Despite regular attacks and shortages, the staff has managed to keep the hospital operational. [On Friday], Al-Shifa hospital lost electrical power.

"MSF denounces the death warrant of civilians currently trapped in Al-Shifa hospital signed by the Israeli military."

MSF said ambulances were not able to collect injured people, and non-stop bombardment had prevented patients and staff from evacuating.

"There are a lot of patients already operated on and they cannot walk. They cannot evacuate," Dr Mohammed Obeid, MSF surgeon at Al-Shifa hospital said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it had lost communication with its contacts in Al Shifa hospital.

The WHO said it has "grave concerns for the safety of the health workers, hundreds of sick and injured patients, including babies on life support and displaced people who remain inside the hospital", and reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
