    Please correct me if I am wrong here. But Maggie Thatcher allowed public housing tenants to purchase their homes at a 50% discount, I do know that.
    Did a similar event occur here in Australia? Or from what I have observed quite a lot of them in lower socio economic areas, got trashed and where left empty.
    No landlords would not leave their properties empty, why would they anyway if NG is Grandfathered.
    If it was not, then they would simply sell them.

    Regarding new builds, I would not touch them nowadays with a bargepole. Have you not heard of building co's going into voluntary liquidation on a daily basis, apparently leaving these poor purchasers out of pocket.
    I also do not understand tis, we build three villas several years ago, that builder went bust halfway through the project, but it was statutory formal builders to take out insurance as part of the contract, is this no longer the case?
    Another builder finished them at a much higher price, at no extra cost to us because the insurers covered it.

    Also 25-30 years ago, the population was much lower of course.
    The government will never build subsidised housing imo.
