    Albany considers new technology
    Ken Matts

ALBANY’S aim to become a cleaner, greener city is being driven to new levels by newly-elected mayor, Milton Evans.
As a result, the city could become the location for the trial of newly-developed wave energy technology, not only to add to the power grid but possibly to an associated desalination plant.

The Mayor has wasted little time since he was elected to the City’s top position, promoting Albany at a variety of meetings.

He attended a Critical Horizons workshop with CEO Andrew Hammond on November 21, convened by the South West Development Authority, on renewable energy opportunities for the south west of Australia.

“Obviously Albany is a step ahead of the pack with the wonderful Albany Wind Farm,” Mr Evans said.

“However, I came away impressed by the opportunities wave and tidal energy presented for Albany, particularly the CETO technology developed by Carnegie Corporation.”

Mr Evans invited Fremantle-based Carnegie Corporation to set up feasibility studies to establish the viability of a large-scale wave energy farm off Albany.

“Chairman Alan Burns was very impressed that Albany had expressed an interest and expressed his immediate interest in Carnegie commencing some site feasibility studfies,” he said.

“Any approval would be subject, of course, to the usual environmental and town planning conditions.

“However, I am keen to pursue a goal of achieving a totally renewable energy-driven city.”

Mayor Evans said he would arrange a briefing for councillors in the new year to provide information on the opportunity for Albany.

Listed with the Australian Stock Exchange, Carnegie Corporation is focused on developing and commercialising clean energy technologies at a time when the world market is undergoing rapid growth.

Carnegie Corporation hopes to capitalise on this through its involvement, not only with its CETO wave energy technology but cleaner coal power, through a low-emission, coal-fired power generation technology.

CETO technology harnesses the renewable energy present in the ocean’s waves and converts it into zero-emission electricity and zero-emission desalinated water.

Invented by Carnegie chairman Alan Burns, CETO has been under development for nearly 10 years.

This design is now undergoing testing at Fremantle and CETO is on track for commercial deployment in 2009.

The CETO wave-power converter is fully-submerged.
