Here is an interesting anecdote from people who work at Woolies, take it or leave it.
When an Aldi moves in next door, Woolies store revenues actually increase. The thought is that extra non-local customers come for the "savings" and "special offers" at the Aldi, can't find what they want and realise the range is limited and end up spending up on a full shop at Woolies anyway.
Oh and hi, I'm a new holder as of last week. Seemed like as good a time as any to jump in.
