Did anybody see that doco on Aldi the other night? I think it was on SBS and it was more like a one-hour commercial for the global supermarket really, but it was interesting historically. And I learned something I didn't know, which is that there are two Aldi chains throughout Europe, one owned by each brother.
It mostly dealt with Aldi's move into the UK and its expansion, which intentionally took off with the 2008 financial crisis and the rise in unemployment and fall in wages.
It included a taste test where some well known cook invited a few friends for dinner, for which she bought all the ingredients at Aldi. Most of them guessed a few products as having come from Aldi but none of them guessed that it was an 100% Aldi meal. But I don't think any of them admitted to having shopped at Aldi, so it was as much a test of self-perceived social status as anything.
