It's one of the great ironies of the brave new era of pricing carbon pollution ... dirty brown coal is emerging as the great survivor of Australia's energy mix. Partly, it's because it's cheap, and, yes, the carbon price is low. But also gas is not emerging as the alternative many thought it would be, effectively pricing itself out of domestic electricity generation.

And finally, while costs are coming down, large scale renewable power is still more expensive than any fossil fuel.

Victoria's Energy and Resources minister, Michael O'Brien: "When you look at Victoria's power supply, over 93 per cent of our electricity comes from brown coal. It's been a source of competitive advantage for 80 years, it's been cheap, and it's been reliable. Now the intention of the carbon price was to make something that was cheap more expensive. But if it's still cheaper than the alternatives, and if those alternatives are gas or expensive renewable, then the economics of the energy market say that brown coal still has a significant future

COLDRY economically viable with existing power station infrastructure,

no new coal fired power stations to be built in Australia ,federal government policy ,but improving on existing practice is implementing the Climate Change Act 2011 that the greens voted for,and retaining Victorias competitive advantage.
