Tuesday, 18 March, 2003 Brisbane oil spill: 7,000 barrels leaked into paddock Brisbane, 18 March, OGT—A massive oil spill, one of the biggest in Australia's history, has occured in Queensland.
It is predicted that 1.5 million litres of crude oil has leaked from a pipeline between the Santos terminal and the Caltex refinery in the Port of Brisbane.
It is believed the spill has not reached the Brisbane river and work is underway to contain the oil.
Santos revealed today that overnight a leak was discovered in the Moonie to Brisbane pipeline, which resulted in the oil spill, 500 metres from the Lytton Terminal, 15 kms east of Brisbane.
The spill, into a paddock, is about 7,000 barrels and is estimated to cover about two hectares.
The area has been evacuated by the Metropolitan Fire Service.
Fire and emergency services are on site as well as Santos environmental officers and oil spill specialists.
The Moonie to Brisbane pipeline supplies oil to the Lytton Terminal for shipment to near-by refineries.
An industry expert said the site was believed to be on sandy soil with a high water table and similar spills overseas in the past have cost millions to clean up.
