WA construction and engineering firm Monadelphous has formed a joint venture with an Italian heavy lifting company that helped refloat the sunken cruiseliner Costa Concordia and install a rocket tower for Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Alevro is the result of a partnership between the Victoria Park-based contractor and Italy’s Fagioli that aims to bring more lift and shift expertise and capability to WA, given the State’s $156 billion pipeline of resources projects.

Fagioli chief executive Fabio Belli visited Perth from Italy last week to formalise the joint venture after the two companies have been working together shifting and installing modules for Fortescue Metals Group’s $US3.8 billion Iron Bridge magnetite project in the Pilbara.

Mr Belli said the 67-year-old company specialised in difficult, alternative lifting jobs that required problem-solving engineering skills.

“This is the first time we have found a company with such a similar way of thinking so this is the first JV we are doing in this way,” he said.
“To do this, you must have great trust in your partner, your values need to be the same.”

Fagioli boasts a vast fleet of self-propelled modular trailers, gantry lifting systems, tower lift systems, strand jacks and crawler cranes.

It is renowned for its efforts in helping to right and recover the wrecked cruise liner Costa Concordia off the Tuscany coast in Italy in 2012-2013 in what is widely regarded as one of the biggest maritime salvage operations in history.
The company was also involved in the assembly of Exxon Mobil’s 600,000t Hebron offshore oil platform off the coast of Newfoundland and the installation of an integration tower for SpaceX’s most powerful rocket to ever be built.

Monadelphous, meanwhile, has worked on major heavy lift jobs in WA including INPEX’s Ichthys LNG project, Woodside’s Pluto LNG plant and BHP’s South Flank iron ore project.

Monadelphous general manager of heavy lifting Lorna Rechichi said the Alevro joint venture brought a global standard in lifting, specialist heavy haulage and logistics capability to Australia and offered a value proposition that rivals couldn’t.
“Amid the constrained labour market, our clients are looking for new and innovative solutions in construction, transportation and installation that minimise labour on-site and reduce time to complete projects,” she said.
“Identifying innovative lifting solutions that minimise labour requirements reduces costs, but it also improves safety and supports our clients’ decarbonisation strategies.”
Ms Rechichi said engineering excellence, a drive to innovate and a problem-solving capability lay at the heart of both Monadelphous and Fagioli, which would be brought together with Alevro.
“Our customers will benefit from this synthesis and our ability to collaborate in solving seemingly insurmountable problems,” she said
