My two bits worth,
A carbon tax at any meaningful initial level, such as $23, and with a clear upwards trajectory, means new gas power can proceed, in the knowledge that NEW COAL cannot.
The market will move up to justify in effect the cheapest available new source.
Moreover with a carbon price impost the existing and future values of the worst brown coal plant will be more clear, and lower, and provide the basis for one off deals to buy the 4 or 5 year closure of hazel wood etc.
Both of these factors will be great news for owners of gas, particularly in NSW.
