when you follow soccer, league positions, relegation battles, european cup places, and so forth then a tie can often be a good result. Those 1 pointers really help.

The average league contains 20 sides so they play 38 league games. Every point counts.

Plus the size of the game also makes it so dynamic and fun. Leagues change every year as three teams get relegated and three teams get promoted.
European cup fixtures are new every year aswell (although the old stables are usually present).
In AFL it's the same 16 sides battling it out year after year. A bit static me thinks. Yes, I know Australia is a small country...... but still.

Soccer is amazing, it has so much going for it. Endless conversations over beer. haha

Then again, Australia is a tiny soccer nation so any argument that socker sucks is not surprising at all.
In Europe and South America it's almost religion. And we love it. :)

But I remember watching the Australia - Uruguay match at the sports bar at Crown Casino in Melbourne and the atmosphere was awesome. Only 1-0 win but we were on our toes all the time, everyone was. When they scored everyone was cheering and going nuts.

Australia needs to make the World Cup or soccer is facing extinction here, imho.

If I got the time I'd love to go to Melbourne to see the qualification match between Australia and 5th place South American team. Just hope they get Kewell and Viduka back in time.
