China owns Taiwan since 1973 under the UN One China policy go which the US and Australia and virtually all the UN members are a party to.
Taiwan was a dictatorship from 1949 to 1996 when it held its first Presidential election.
If the US now wants to recognise Taiwan as a separate country to China , it like Aus should do the right thing and bring a vote in the UN for a reversal of the 1973 One China Charter.
Otherwise , the UN is redundant, IMO and if we want to buck UN Policy, then we should bailout and save the Aussie Taxpayers Billions .
