Xi Jinping is certainly being challenged by the PLA but I doubt there are any democratic motives.
What is interesting is whether the PLA is gung-ho about going to war over Taiwan. They would be better informed about the depth of corruption [they have become rich themselves] and tofu-dreg military hardware and discretion may be the better part of valour.
