Many of the skills of coal miners transfer easily to other industries, particularly mining industries. It isn't the right wing labor unions opposing nuclear power, it's the left. Here's a reference to what one union official has to say about nuclear power.

I see an about face coming on as left/green groups realise that their dream of a low carbon future requires a serious look at nuclear power. NTU is well placed to ride the coming pro nuclear wave imo. Our company has some serious uranium exploration assets.
