As a youth realised a flair for language and had side jobs for Italians, Yugoslavs and others who introduced me to the lower Mafia.

Some are friends now, so have a connection to Italy, Poland and central eastern Europe.

I too have a similar history, though no Irish that I know of, dutch and other European and English/Scottish. some arrived for the gold but others just came here for a better life. just like modern immigrants.

I've been watching a fascinating doco on the voyage of the Draken. a 60m x 8m 'viking' ship built using traditional tools and methods, except for lifting equipment, sailing with a crew of 34 from Norway to Newfoundland canada. astonishing craft and construction, deeply impressive courage to sail across the north Atlantic. just thought you might be interested given Ethred th Red. (bloody commie)
