    Can't wait for the next Royal commission.......

    I doubt it will get that far. People are awake to the issue of "RoboTax."
    The situation revolves around people who have a legitimate historical debt to the ATO.
    At some stage the ATO decided the debt was uneconomical to recover so didn't pursue it however they were recently informed that according to the law they had no choice in the matter. Their preferred option is to wait until a taxpayer has credit and deduct it from that.

    It's likely that the Government would need to change the law so that the ATO can write off debt.
    Which I find annoying as someone who has diligently paid their tax.
    It would be an incentive for people to not pay small amounts of tax and get away with it.
    Where do you draw the line?

    Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones said the minister is looking into the issue and "the government is deeply concerned about the way this was communicated and the stress caused to those who received the letters".He said the ATO was reviewing its approach with taxpayers and the government would wait for the agency's findings "before we commit to any action"
