Incumbent Premier Alan Carpenter has vowed to introduce formal legislation, effectively banning uranium mining in Western Australia if elected in the upcoming State Election. In somewhat of a back flip, the move comes after Parliament blocked a similar Bill only four months ago when introduced by the Greens. The decision would appear to come as a surprise for some, particularly Cameco and Mitsubishi, who paid nearly US$500m for Rio Tinto’s Kintyre uranium deposit only last month.
