Wayne Swan hits miners with $38m advertising blitz.

Sid Maher and David Uren From: The Australian May 29, 2010

WAYNE Swan has sidestepped Labor's own government advertising rules to launch a $38 million print, radio and television blitz against the mining industry this weekend.
The provocative move to defend the government's proposed resource super-profits tax incensed the opposition, which accused the government of "ethics evasion" and drew charges from the Minerals Council of Australia that it was misleading.

The deepening rift over the tax came as new figures and a prominent economist challenged Treasury secretary Ken Henry's claim that the resources sector did not save the nation from recession.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed the mining industry generated more value last year, during the depths of the global financial crisis, than any other part of the economy, overtaking manufacturing for the first time.

Commsec chief economist Craig James said: "It suggests that the mining sector may have saved the Australian economy after all during the global financial crisis."
